Managing Your Recovery Key
Your recovery key is a critical piece of your account security. It is the only mechanism to regain access to your encrypted data if you ever forget your password.
What Is the Recovery Key?
The recovery key is a randomly generated string that, combined with your account, allows Equipath to re-derive your encryption key. It is generated when you first set up your account.
Accessing Your Recovery Key
- Go to Settings → Security.
- Under Recovery Key, click View Recovery Key (requires password confirmation).
- Copy the key and store it in a secure location.
Storage Best Practices
- ✅ Print and store in a fireproof safe.
- ✅ Store in a password manager alongside your account credentials.
- ✅ Give a copy to a trusted advisor in a sealed envelope.
- ❌ Do not store only in your email or cloud documents.
- ❌ Do not share with anyone you don't fully trust.
If You Lose Your Recovery Key
If you lose both your password and recovery key, your data cannot be recovered — even by Equipath. This is by design to protect your privacy.
If you still have your current password, generate a new recovery key immediately:
- Go to Settings → Security.
- Click Regenerate Recovery Key.
- Save the new key securely.
Warning: Regenerating a recovery key invalidates the previous one.
